What is the Difference between a Modular & Portable Building?

We are often asked what is the difference between Modular and Portable Buildings and as a major supplier of both types of buildings, we really should know!

However, if you asked a dozen people, you would probably get a dozen different answers. The dilemma is that there is actually quite a similarity between the two types although they are quite different – that’s cleared that up then!

It is maybe better to describe each type and hope that makes it clearer.

So, what is the difference between a modular & portable building?

Portable Building:

A portable building is generally a self-contained, moveable building, built off-site to meet your specific needs. Whilst they are sturdy and built to last, being manufactured from the same materials and in the same way as modular, we suppose their purpose is generally as a temporary solution. They offer great flexibility and can be effortlessly relocated to a new site or easily extended should more space be required. A portable building is therefore the right choice where flexibility is required and the potential for the need to move or re-site the building has been anticipated.  Incidentally, Jack-leg cabins should be included in this category as they meet most of the descriptions above and are constructed the same way but additionally feature adjustable metal legs. They can be double stacked to offer more space from the same footprint.

Modular Building:

A modular building is made up of a number of bays to create a larger space. Again built off-site but delivered in single units and then installed on-site to create a bigger building. This may be just two units for say a small classroom or multiple units single or even 2 storeys to create a major office block.  They are designed to be permanent structures but can be moved if circumstances change.

Hopefully, that makes it a little clearer, the common stuff is that whatever the type, they all get the same GCS treatment built from quality materials to a high standard, meeting all your requirements. You will receive a building that is flexible, cost-effective, and available in a fraction of the time of a traditional build.
